MEDIA: Not love at first sight for spam

A Norfolk car dealer sent out a Valentine's Day advertisement through a company that is listed as a notorious spammer.

February 15 2006

Kimnach Ford, an automobile dealer in Norfolk, used a company listed on the Internet as a spam e-mail operator for a Valentine's Day ad sent out Monday.

The ad, a version of which is posted on the dealership's Web site, is adorned with red roses and lists several deals for the Ford Fusion, Escape, Mustang and F-150. The ad also has a link that says "Norfolk Florist" that viewers are supposed to click on to win Valentine's roses.

Kimnach Ford used an Illinois company called Expedite Media Group for the e-mail campaign. The ad is legitimate, but it might not have gotten into people's e-mail boxes because the company is listed as a spam operator on Spamhaus.com, a well-known clearinghouse for Internet scams and spam perpetrators.

Bill Gordon, business development director for Kimnach Ford, said the dealership found Expedite Media on the Internet. Gordon said it was a marketing method the dealership wanted to try because many people use the Internet to shop for cars.

Spam is any e-mail message sent to many recipients without their consent. It's not the same as bulk-distributed e-mails, which many people might get but they either signed up for them or could decline them at any time. Spam comes to you whether you want it or not.

Computers have a unique identification number called an IP address. It tells users what machines Internet and e-mail messages come from. Many network and individual computer spam filters block messages from IP addresses known for sending out spam.

Gordon said the dealership paid about $425 to send the e-mails out Monday, in time for Valentine's Day. He said not many people came to the dealership Tuesday citing the ad, but that isn't unusual because it might take a few days before people take advantage of the deals.

Brian Kramer of Expedite is listed on Spamhaus. Kramer said his company is legitimate and follows all U.S. laws regarding Internet marketing and spamming.

He said Spamhaus and sites like it simply blackmail companies into paying to get off its lists. Kramer said the listings, which he contends are bogus, circumvent many legitimate advertisements.

Expedite's IP address is listed on other spam blocking lists, including spamcop.net.

If you want to check on an e-mail marketing company or on an e-mail you receive, you can check the IP addresses on Spamhaus and SpamCop. You also can report spam to the Federal Trade Commission at www.ftc.gov/spam.
