MEDIA: Microsoft Sues Russian-Based Spam Network

Created: 12.05.2005 16:35 MSK (GMT +3), Updated: 16:35 MSK

The attorney general of Massachussetts, Thomas Reilly, sued a group of spammers, reportedly one of the worlds largest rings generating millions of unsolicited e-mails monthly for illegal products. The network operated from two locations, one near Boston, the other in Russia.

The alleged ringleader is Leo Kuvayev. The suit was brought on the basis of an accusation supplied by Microsoft against him and six other people associated with two companies, 2K Services Ltd. and Ecash Pay Ltd. The state judge, Ralph D. Gants, ordered the shutdown of the companies.

Reilly alleged that the two companies flood e-mail boxes with advertisements for illegal and dangerous products, such as counterfeit prescription drugs and pirated software, as well as advertisements for pornography. The attorney general made the announcement with Brad Smith, a senior vice president of Microsoft Corp., which aided the investigation by capturing thousands of the spam messages and tracing their origins. The spam generated by the group and their affiliates directed recipients to Web sites promoting products that include counterfeit versions of popular drugs, including Vioxx, Celebrex and Viagra. They also sell pirate versions of popular software, including some made by Microsoft, and hardcore pornography.

"Anyone who has a computer and uses the Internet has had to deal with these spam e-mails. At the very least they are a nuisance, a tremendous inconvenience and very disruptive to our economy," Reilly was quoted by AP as saying. "But in this case these e-mails went well beyond a nuisance. There are also very serious public safety implications."

The spam ring allegedly uses thousands of names and Internet domains, some of them registered in Monaco, Australia and France, and hosted on servers in China, Korea, Brazil and Taiwan. While its not clear exactly how many spam messages the group was responsible for, Smith estimated that the group generated "hundreds of millions of e-mail messages each and every month." Kuvayev is listed by the spam-watch organization as one of the top 200 spammers in the world.
