MEDIA: Detroit feds to announce charges in major spam ring

January 3, 2008

The U.S. Attorney's Office has scheduled a news conference today to announce the indictment of 11 people in a major Internet spam investigation.

It described the indictment as one of the largest nationwide.

Among the indicted are Alan Ralsky of West Bloomfield, his son-in-law and nine others. They were indicted in Detroit on charges of running an illegal Internet spam operation.

Spam is the sending of unwanted bulk emails hawking goods and services.

The investigation stems from incidents that allegedly occurred starting in 2005. The defendants are residents if Michigan, California, Arizona, Russia, Canada and Hong Kong.

Indicted along with Ralsky is believed to be his son-in-law, Scott Bradley, also of West Bloomfield. Bradley, is scheduled to be arraigned today along with Judy Devenow, 55, of Lansing. Another defendant, How-Wai John Hui, 49, of Vancouver, Canada, and Hong Kong, was arrested Wednesday in New York. The other defendants are being sought.

Ralsky is considered to be one of the most prolific spammers in the country, sending tens of thousands of emails daily to Internet users, the U.S. Justice Department said.

The federal case is assigned to U.S. District Judge Maryanne Battani.
